World’s Best Outdoor Gym

There is a new place to work out in Wichita; it is not the YMCA, Genesis, or boutique fitness studio.

It is the World’s Best Outdoor Gym.

The Fitness Court will open at 1 pm on May 10th and you can find it at 2640 N Wellington Place. This is brought to you by a team-up of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, Wichita Parks & Rec, and the National Fitness Campaign.

Combine it with their app and you’ve got yourself a coach.

CIVIL

Crown Heights Flooding

If you or someone you love has ever lived on Bleckley Drive or around that area, you know you probably need a boat or a canoe when it rains.

It’s infamous for the flooding that occurs at “Bleckley River”.

The City of Wichita is looking into potential solutions to fixing this problem, but it could also cost big (like $36 million big).

Kansas Public Schools

A new Kansas Open Enrollment law kicks off this fall.

It will allow kids to apply at schools outside of the district they live in.

If there are available spots in the desired district, a few kids outside that district will be able to attend.

It is estimated that more than 450 students outside of the Wichita School District could come into USD259.

City Survey

Public transportation, or lack thereof, is often a hot topic for local Wichitans. The City is looking for some feedback on how to provide more convenient rides.

LOCAL

Wichita is a Sports City

Lacrosse is one of those sports that isn’t super popular here in Kansas, but it is pretty cool and super popular elsewhere.

Wichita is hosting the 2024 USA Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates National Championships starting tomorrow through Friday at the Stryker Sports Complex.

You can attend (and park) for free.

We are also set to host the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 2025 at INTRUST Bank Arena!

Opera Kansas

In collaboration with Exploration Place, check out the Opera Kansas’ upcoming production of Mr. Twister and the Tale of Tornado Alley on Tuesday, May 14.

Wesley Playground

Wesley Medical Center had plans to turn a park next to the hospital into a parking lot, until the community really didn’t like that.

They have since backed off this plan.

International Student Exchange

When I was in high school, it was always fun to meet the 5-10 international exchange students. They came from all over and always provided a taste of their culture.

Currently, ~50 students are looking for a host family in Wichita.

Wish ICT is hosting their A Toast to Wishes 2024 event at the Petroleum Club on June 1st!

Breakthrough Clubhouse

Breakthrough Clubhouse is a mental health community aimed to empower Wichitans living with mental illness to break down barriers and lead happier, healthier, more independent lives.

They have a fundraiser coming up on June 4th!
