Food Hall Incoming

Something I have harped on over the years as a way to improve Wichita and our downtown is to create a food hall.

I’ve been to a couple of these, like Union Station in Denver or Bluebird Market in Silverthorn, where there are a plethora of different food vendors and types of food all in the same spot.

They are awesome and although I wish it was in our downtown Union Station, it looks like the dream is slowly becoming reality.

Niche is WSU Tech’s culinary school at Broadway and William which opened about two years ago.

It contains a food hall on the first floor (next to Jinya Ramen which is currently closed) and the first tenant just opened up.

The Coffee Spot is a student-run venture serving everything you’d expect from a coffee spot - coffee, tea, pastries, breakfast, and lunch.

Coming up in the spring is pizza and more to come in 2026. There are 5-6 spaces for different concepts.

Food Deserts

This is a topic that deserves a whole deep dive.

A food desert is “an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food”. Areas like 21st near I-135 where Mr MC’s is located.

The City of Wichita just approved funding of nearly $1 million as part of the Health Corner Store Initiative to help solve the Food Desert issue.

Nearly 25% of Wichita residents live in a food desert and have to go more than a mile to find fresh produce.

Holocaust Memorial

Wichita has a great destination in the Veterans Memorial Park along the river.

A Holocaust Memorial may soon join it down there.

This project has been in the works for a year, costs about $100k and is privately funded.

The land will be provided by the city free of charge. It will go to a vote by the City tomorrow.

The Short & Suite Nutcracker by Midwest Dance Mechanix has been voted one of Wichita’s best annual event for the last three years!

The Wichita area has more than one chance for you to live up the Christmas spirit.

$1000 Lease Signing Bonus

Now through December 4, 2024, the City of Wichita will pay a $1,000 lease signing bonus for the first 30 units leased to Veterans coming from homelessness using a Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) voucher.

Leases must start between November 5 and December 4, 2024.
