We are doing the biggest giveway we have EVER done over on our Instagram right now.

Wichita Life Hacks

I asked our community a simple question:

(Not to be confused with a Wichita Life™️ Hack.)

To be more clear, what is something everyone should know that makes life a little bit better or a little bit easier?

We asked on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and pulled a few ideas from this question on reddit.

I’ll try to break it into a few different sections to organize thoughts, but let’s think of this as a working document that I can later turn into a blog you can share with family and friends.

After you read it, let us know what we’re missing so we can add to the list! I quoted the ones that people submitted and added context where I felt I had something to add.

General

• “Wichita is a big city and a small town all at once and it’s awesome”
• “RSVPs mean nothing. People will come who didn’t. People will ghost you that did”
• “Dress for every season, every day”
• “We have all seasons, sometimes in one day. 🌹 😎 🍁 🌨️ 🥊”
• “Don’t trust the weather man” - C’mon now, not their fault. That’s just Kansas.
• “Beware of renting homes that have been flipped b investors”
• “Beware of The Turkey at Central and Greenwich”
• “Volunteer! There are so many amazing non-profits and some amazing places in Wichita that you never even knew about until you start volunteering!” - we will work on a guide for volunteering.
• “Make a new email for all the car washes and never pay again” This is not financial advice.
• “Just follow Wichita Life for any and all updates” 💁‍♂️
• “If you get pulled over and fined for having expired tags you can take proof of registration to City Hall and have the ticket waived. Even if the tags were legit expired.”
• Wichita is a last minute town. An event (concerts, show, etc) will seem like no one is going to come and then people will buy / show up the week of.

Travel / Commutes

• “Don’t take the highway around 3:30 - 4pm”
• “if pumps are busy wait behind a small car, they have smaller gas tanks”
• “Nobody knows how to drive, no one.”
• “Don’t take Kellogg” or “Avoid Kellogg at Rush Hour” or “When there is a crash on Kellogg (and there will be) just take the side roads”
• “KanDrive (app) when you’re using Kellogg, before you leave”
• “The secret to Rock Road is Woodlawn”
• “Wait a minute before going when the light turns green. One or five people will run the red light 🤦‍♀️”
• “You can live on the west side and come to the east. And vice versa.”
• “Never turn left across Rock Road.” or “Stay off Rock Rd as much as possible. Instead, try Woodlawn or Webb, if possible”
• “The closer you get to Broadway and 21st, the more likely you are to get stuck at a stopped train.”
• “Don’t take Kellogg during the hours of 7:30-9:00am or 4:30-6:00pm”
• “Central is sometimes faster than Kellogg…”
• “There will always be construction going on somewhere on Kellogg.”
• “If you change your own oil and have a bunch saved up, Walmart will let you dump your used oil in their used oil container.”

Food / Shopping

• “You can get seated at any restaurant at 5:00 every Friday / Saturday”
• “If the red light is on at Krispy Kreme donuts you can get a free donut.”
• “You can buy fruit and vegetable seeds with food stamps.”
• “Barnes and Noble has Cheesecake Factory Cheesecake”
• “Ollie’s and Wichita Home Outlet are amazing places to shop for discounted, but new items.”
• “Aldi’s is great for groceries and not all Walmarts have the same thing.”
• “There are some really good thrift shops in DooDah”
• “Eat at Albero Cafe”
• “the bar is always open seating and never apart of the waitlist @ homegrown”
• “Follow Reverie for pastry discounts”
• “Check out the Assistance League of Wichita”
• “Steak night specials are a thing, coffee on every corner, and taco Tuesday never disappoint”
• “Start a weekly rotation of all the brewpubs. So much good 🍺, so little ⏱️..”
• “the restaurant at the hyatt regency is open to the public, has a pretty dope breakfast buffet, and gives you a 20% discount if you go in before or after a show at century 2. their breakfast is not as good as homegrown’s, but when homegrown is busy, i’ll head over to the hyatt. (also, if the front parking lot is full, you can park in the parking garage, and they’ll validate your parking if you ate at the restaurant.)”
• “Mexican markets got the dope avocados and pre-cut mangoes”
• If you love old fashioned malts, gotta go to Old Mill Tasty Shop!’
• “Grace Market has a tasty takeout restaurant inside”
• “N&J offers free hummus on Mondays”
• “Cinnamon’s Deli has the best sandwiches in town!”
• “Thai Binh bakes their own bread, has cheap banh mi, and sells fresh corn and flour tortillas”
• “ICTBooks is an awesome spot to get used books. Their regular building is well organized while the warehouse is absolutely packed with awesome stuff.”
• Kids meals are $1.99 at Meddy’s when you dine-in

Entertainment

• “Sunflower Summer App”
• “You can have 7 hours of art, music, drinks, dancing, community and hella fun for only $35 at the Tribal Roots warehouse!"
• “Exploration Place membership gets you free admission to Science City in KC”
• “The Wichita library now allows you to check out experience passes (memberships to zoo, Botanica, Tanganyika, so on)”
• “A City of Wichita pool membership is only $70 for the whole summer”
• “WSU’s YMCA has awesome equipment and a cool layout”
• “The Andover library allows you to check out items (speciality cake pans)”
• “There is a drag show at XY almost every Sunday”
• “Visit the public library and the Wichita Art Museum frequently”
• “Art Museum is free on Saturday.” and “General admission at the WAM is free every day now! You just have to pay to see certain exhibits.”
• “There are at least three good areas for hiking in Wichita. Great Plains Nature Center, Pawnee Prairie, and the river near the Keeper of the Plains are best known.”
• “If you have a project, check out The Yard. It's a DIY'ers dream.”
• “If you want to do long runs or easy, mostly traffic-free bike rides, Redbud Trail and Prairie Sunset Trail go for miles and they're flat (thanks Rails to Trails!)”
