What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say Eastborough?
Alright, ready?
One…two…three…
DON’T. SPEED.
Eastborough is a city within a city.
If we’re going to get technical, it’s an “enclave” which is a territory / small territory that is entirely surrounded by the territory of one other state or entity i.e. a city within a city. Some call it a suburb.
Eastborough (East of Wichita + Borough which means a town or district) was planned by a British architect named Burdon Hunter.
Hunter stood “atop a high hill” east of Wichita and pictured an “an English village in the midst of a Kansas prairie.”
Development was kicked off in 1929 by Alton H. Smith who went on to marry Kate English (daughter of Nathaniel A. English, a co-founder of Wichita), Harrison W. Albright and Harry T. Morgan.
The plan was for 215 acres of winding drives, beautiful wide lawns, parks and a lake.
They were forced to postpone development due to the discovery of oil in the area which delayed the establishment until the mid-1930s. The Derby Oil Company stopped drilling around 1936.
Prior to actually being incorporated, Eastborough tried and failed to annex (proclaim / establish its sovereignty) from Wichita in 1930 which was shot down.
The original plan was to “incorporate” once the first 30 houses were completed until dispute arose.
Eastborough and Woodlawn were neighboring subdivisions sandwiched between Kellogg and Central and they couldn’t agree on a name for the street that split them apart.
You know the old saying, if you can’t beat em, join em?
Or maybe, the more the merrier?
Well, the dispute was ultimately solved on June 1, 1937 when the two subdivisions decided to incorporate together as the City of Eastborough.
Circling back to the original comment, why did I say don’t speed?
If you’ve ever driven east or west between Woodlawn and Rock / Towne East, you know why.
The speed limit drops lower than the surrounding Wichita streets.
It is 35 mph in the surrounding area while Eastborough boasts a 43% reduction in speed down to 20 mph.
The mall wasn’t built until 1975, but Douglas was one of the main routes for people to get to the mall through Eastborough rather than take Kellogg which had congestion issues at the time. Once Kellogg was updated in 2009, Douglas wasn’t necessarily the best route anymore.
In 2002, Eastborough gave up some of it’s land for the expansion of Kellogg / U.S. Route 54.
The pond and playground were built as part of this project in 2003.
We sure do love Eastborough Park.
What were your previous thoughts on Eastborough? Did you learn anything today?
