School is (almost) out. It’s getting hot. Time to go outside and enjoy some sun.
Although we don’t have any beaches or mountains to explore, we still have plenty of spots around Wichita you can go on an adventure.
Today we want to highlight Redbud Trail.
(If you want a a quick overview, check out this video from friend of Wichita Life, Veloace!)
The History of Redbud Trail
Redbud Trail is a 16.1-mile trail built on a former BNSF freight / rail line that runs East to West through Wichita. The train used to export local agricultural commodities like hay and livestock and brought in manufactured goods from across the country, but at some point was abandoned.
The trail created as part of the nationwide nonprofit Rails to Trails Initiative that helps communities swap out unused railroads for usable bike and walking paths.
6 miles of the path in Wichita is paved and much of the rest is gravel /crushed limestone but I haven’t heard of many issues biking down it.
Starting on the west end, Redbud Trail starts at I-135, heads east through Wichita, right by Wichita State, through Andover and out towards Augusta. The abandoned rail line does continue past that point but it isn’t recommended as parts are impassable and pretty rough.
Roughly every mile or so, you’ll have to cross a roadway. Some of these have marked pathways to cross the street while others do not, so be careful.
Connections
Although the Redbud Trail has a start and end, there are a couple of connections that help extend it all over the area through the Greater Wichita Bikeway Network.
There are several improvements coming to Redbud Trail:
More of the road will be paved
An overpass over Rock Road
Extending the east end 4 miles to cross over south of Kellogg and into Augusta
Comments
Check out what some locals have to say:
“I rode the trail starting in Andover, heading southeast, then backtracked to go west toward Wichita and again back to where I started at N Andover Road. Going east of Andover was about 4 miles of packed, manageable gravel and great Heartland rural scenery- complete with cows and wildflowers. Going toward west toward Wichita, the path was very well maintained concrete.” - @dbendick
“Love the new part going from Andover towards Augusta. Not much traffics and nice chipped path. Like to run and bike on it.” - @denise17
“I love it! One of my favorite runs is from Woodlawn to Andover rd and back. There’s a good amount of trail variation and setting changes, and you’re away from all the car noise/exhaust.” - @nunyabiznessyo
“Used to bike a section of it a few times a week after work. Beautiful trail, well maintained, lots of foot traffic, what's not to love?” - @blkdrgn42
When it comes to looking and feeling your best, sometimes teamwork makes the dream work.
