Crown Uptown

Crown Uptown Theater (dinner theatre) on Douglas near Hillside opened in 1928, nearly 100 years ago.

Mike Brown, out of Tulsa, bought it 14 months ago.

It currently has a max occupancy of 850 people. Brown has applied to the Wichita City Council to raise this occupancy to 2066 people by restructuring the interior. He recently did this about 5 years ago turning the Scottish Rite Center downtown into TempleLive.

This will likely go to vote on 12/3 and will require 6 of 7 votes for approval after protests of some of the neighbors surrounding concerns about 2000 people coming into that space on a weekly basis.

If rejected, Brown will either sell the building or demolish it.

The Black Business Tour in Downtown Wichita, happening on November 23, 2024, from 12 PM to 4 PM, celebrates culture and entrepreneurship by showcasing local Black-owned businesses including 2 Beatz Boutique, Left on Read, Lola's Candle Co, The Blackprint ICT, Wichita Cheesecake Company, and Greater Ground Coffee.

TapNPaddles Misconceptions

TapNPaddles just opened in Wichita near K-96 and Oliver.

There is a little confusion around town, so we wanted to clarify a couple of misconceptions:

It is NOT a members-only venue. Anyone is welcome to come play!
It is NOT just for expert players. Players of all levels can come have fun. Yes, that means you, you beginner you.

84.3% of last school year’s class graduated, which is a 5.1% increase in just a year.

Wichita City Council Updates

Here are a couple of quick updates from this week’s city council meeting:

Delayed Vote on Paid Parking Plan until 12/10
Approved $500k for new public restrooms at two city parks - these are not porta-potties, but permanent stand-alone single-toilet facilities. The name may cause confusion “Portland Loo” (after Portland) which some may confuse with “Porta-potty”

Emergency Winter Shelter

The new Multi-Agency Center that will serve as the city’s emergency homeless shelter this winter at the former Park Elementary School Building
